Why do you hold onto it?

What are you asking? Are you asking about why you feel sad when you deal with issues from inner work? If so, there's probably some level of shame or embarrassment attached to what you're dealing with. The heart of the onion is always strongest.

Attachment. Feeling as though it is a part of what makes me "me".

@Slim Titan

Not why we are sad when x, y or z happens, but why people tend to hold onto that sadness...sometimes for a lifetime.

(Do 'we' hold onto sadness and pain, or do 'we' hold onto the excitement
that was there before x,y,z happened and now feel pain and sadness
because that particular type of excitement is gone (?))

"I have the right to be excited, and look what happened to me!"

When excitement comes, use it up as it comes,
and don't mind when it is consumed.

Because deep down, you think you can change the past by holding on to it. Same goes for negativity in general (you get pissed/sad becasue you think somebody will come over and fix the situation, like a crying toddler).

This topic stemmed from watching this clip on Marina Abramovic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_pHXPU72So

It happened for a reason.
Things I'm holding onto.
Things I need to forgive.

Just a quote from your "Starting Over" topic that has been going through my mind the past few times I've seen you post

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

We hold on to sadness for the same reason that we hold on to anything: fear of the void, fear of emptiness, fear of mortality ... fear ... fear ... fear.

@Argorn

Cool.

Is that me being cool? ;)

It's a work in progress.

@Pindar

Heavy on the fear.
That's an interesting way to look at it.

We identify with it because we are afraid of becoming who we are. We are afraid of filling the void with ourselves.
We are afraid of emptiness. We have been taught to be afraid of it. To fill it with our jobs, our diplomas, our 'other halves', our strongest emotions (hedonism).

Buddhist monks meditate for hours to get that good old empty feeling. You tell your doctor that you're feeling empty and they'll prescribe you medication.

But the emptiness is the best. I've read before the masculine seeks it as it's end goal.

I seem to have gotten to the point where emotion isn't even being created that I have to deal with in the first place. 10/10 would recommend lol
