Below are two links to audio with a written article. The first link is about cognitive dissonance the second link is about self-manipulation. The article about self-manipulation should be seen in terms of projective identification. Both are about changing perception.

This link is about Cognitive Dissonance.

In modern psychology, cognitive dissonance is the discomfort experienced when simultaneously holding two or more conflicting cognitions: ideas, beliefs, values or emotional reactions. In a state of dissonance, people may sometimes feel "disequilibrium": frustration, hunger, dread, guilt, anger, embarrassment, anxiety, etc. [1] The phrase was coined by Leon Festinger in his 1956 book When Prophecy Fails, which chronicled the followers of a UFO cult as reality clashed with their fervent belief in an impending apocalypse.[2][3] Festinger subsequently (1957) published a book called A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance in which he outlines the theory. Cognitive dissonance is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projective_identification

Projective identification is a term first used by Melanie Klein (1946) to describe a process whereby parts of the ego are thought of as forced into another person who is then expected to become identified with whatever has been projected.[1]
The projector strives to find in the other, or to induce the other to become, the very embodiment of projection.[2]

If you understand cognitive dissonance then you can help resolve some of the troubles that you'll face with ego and with bending to the will of others. See this thread.

I'm not into this psychological terminology... but I leave all the drama to the broad.

Neither of you took up the articles in the way that I had intended them to be taken up.

They were meant to be introspective pieces to help you build a better self.

Panoramix: if you listen to the audio then there is much less psychological jargon and a lot more talking in plain language. NPR is a political radio station. This stuff is watered-down to be able to be digested in a practical way by the public.

Cognitive Dissonance is actually a very useful thing to have information on...self knowledge is not to be confused with lightsabering.

Lightsabering reaches an ultimate peak where it is no longer providing a growth in terms of time investment...self knowledge and self actualization has no such constraints. :geek:
