Hey guys, it's been awhile. I recently met my dad for the first time in decades. For years I fantasized about throwing back the hands I caught and I had even accepted that I may never see him again. Out of all his kids I got it the worst, this dude beat the natural confidence most kids have out of me and made a depressed child. He was present for my formative years but mostly to dole out punishments cuz my mom couldn't hack it. When I saw him and 'confronted' him, I had no negative feelings. His kids all had something to say and when my turn came to speak I said everything I needed to say in about 5 minutes. I barely remember a thing I said as it came from a deep place and not rehearsed. I only remember being still and economic with my words, but my siblings told me it was the most epic shit I've ever said. To my surprise he sat there, listened and took it in. We've met up a couple times since and we've actually had good conversations since. So where do we go from here? Breaking bread with him is not forgetting what happened or excusing it but moving on from there. I feel no need for revenge or retribution. The old me would struggle to see where I stand now. This is not how I saw things playing out but it's the most positive outcome, considering this guy was my Final Boss. There's alot more to unpack but I will share in due time. |
