I was on the fence about picking up this book, True Self by J Wells. (Might be another squandering moment that I'm trying to grasp for air before sinking). The cover drew me in anyways and I decided to pick it up.

The chapter I'm on right now discusses empowering beliefs and limiting beliefs. One of his recommended exercises is called "Pacing and Leading". In short, you write down a bunch of facts: 2+2=4; the switch controls the light, the key starts the car; this is the PACING. Then, you write your new belief: My life is noticeably better every day (LEADING). He says do this a few times and the mechanics behind it are from NLP.

When I first read it I had 2 thoughts.

1) This sounds like fucking bolony, aka hooey.

2) Stop taking short cuts with these books TheDude and jump into the fire! (I'm leaning this way)

This is exercise is not something I feel will solve any problems.

So, fellas what do you guys think of "Pacing & Leading"?

From now on, anytime you feel the urge to buy some bullshit, PayPal me the money instead and read my section a few more times...you'll still end up better off. 8-)

These books I buy go like this: you do the exercises, you feel good, you think your changing for the better, then little while after you see your demons on knocking on the door for food again.

I feel like the ones that write 5-star reviews about how a book changed their lives is nothing more than them lying to themselves that their inner problems are gone. I could easily be wrong, but my gut is also firm on this!

Put the books down. I've been caught in the trap of reading. I love reading about anything and everything, but when you're doing it for self-help then i'd suggest throwing it all away. In actual fact, you're probably just delaying the real work you need to do by reading more bullshit theory and technique.

Get rid. You're scared, which is why you bury yourself in self-help stuff.

Send Kidd some money and delete all the e-books you have. My greatest steps forward came when I wasn't reading shit, but rather being with myself.

@TheDude

just to clarify, we don't mean that books\self help books are bad.

What Kidd and the others are trying to say is that:

A. You need to trust your gut
and
B. There is no short cuts like doing some NLP trick or saying some affirmation and boom: your problem is gone from the root\core.

if you have money do a phone session with The Kidd. It would be a good investment
for you. There is a lot you could get even in just one session 8-)

It's because, like people have already said, you're running away from facing yourself. Covering up the insecurities and downloading/buying the book all the while hoping that reading this will make it all go away. What's funny is that to make progress, you have to have a mindset that's quite the opposite - embrace those demons and examine them.

I understand what your saying. I'm not going to stop reading books; just going to stop reading books to "heal" myself.

@Moose35~ "Embrace those demons and examine them" is actually what I'm going to do.

I really like books and reading.

You just gotta pick your reading material more carefully.

Stay away from books that involve changing your beliefs. It's like trying to tweak te registry when you should be wiping the hard drive
