The 1% rule states that the number of people who create content on the Internet represents approximately 1% of the people who view that content. For example, for every person who posts on a forum, generally about 99 other people view that forum but do not post. The term was coined by authors and bloggers Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba,[2] although earlier references to the same concept[3] did not use this name.

Quoting wikipedia
Research in late 2012 suggested that only 23% of the population (rather than 90 percent) could properly be classified as lurkers, while 17% of the population could be classified as intense contributors of content.
According to my calculations, 14% of our forum members are contributors of content.97 of the 685 members have contributed 44,248 of the 44,697 posts. Some intense contributors have left but still the percentage would be much higher than 1%. Good news for our place I guess |

My first sentence above is confusing, might as well try again... It should read "14% of our forum members have contributed 99% of the content." 72% of users have never posted on the forum, 28% have posted at least once, 9% have posted 50 or more times, and only 3% have posted 500 or more times. @Jared Our posts lack coherence and need to be restructured and heavily edited to assemble a book. |

The 90-9-1 rule is a rule of thumb for internet communities: 90% of people lurk, 9% contribute a little, 1% do most of the work. It is true on Reddit, where 25% of the most popular subreddits are administered by four people; on Wikipedia (77% is written by 1% of users!) & others.
