I don't think it's a good idea to get a perspective on the westerner/thai girl from "bar girls". Most Thai women are not "bar girls". Most British and American women are not strippers, hookers or porn stars. Most Dutch women aren't working in brothels in Amsterdam.

I'm not judging porn stars, hookers, strippers or bar girls and I'm not assuming what there life is like.

However if a bar girl is miserable in Thailand I certainly wouldn't use that to gauge how happy Thai women are in general. I suspect that there are some strippers, porn stars and hookers (not all) throughout the west that are very unhappy. This is hardly a gauge on the happiness of western women.

The quote "In Thailand we don't cry when someone dies, we are happy for them because their suffering os over". Could this be from Buddhism which is a major religion in Thailand? It's no different from Christianity in that we assume the person has gone to heaven. I assume there are similar quotes from Judaism, Hinduism, Islam?

I would agree with seek that they are happy for people's suffering being over whn they die comes from
the fact that buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand and to the Buddhist, all suffering comes
from humans resisting(suffering) the peace that is present at all times. To them death is the ultimate release from this.

In Judaism people cry when someone dies however they also talk about the fact that he is in heaven or a better place. So it's kind of the same....

Yeah definitely I don't think that people in Thailand or anywhere are 100% happy all the time by I do think there is something about that country that really lifts my spirits when I'm there and continues to lift my spirits for a long time afterwards. I've heard a lot of people say the same thing about India although I've never being there.

When I came back from Thailand in 04 and 06 I felt very indifferent, content and happy.

I don't know much about the whole "falang" thing although I do remember a couple random people saying that to me, not in a nasty way but in a nice way.

However I don't feel like I had any special treatment there or anything. To me it felt more like I was being welcomed, like if you were at a social gathering of like 10 people and there was one guy there who didn't know anyone but was from South America or something, so you make a little extra effort to make him feel welcome.

That's the vibe I get from places like Thailand, San Francisco etc.

I got that vibe in Austria when I was there to and Amsterdam when I was there last year. This one guy and his daughter liked walked with me for five minutes to make sure I got to my destination after I asked for directions, same thing happened in SF.

I felt that great vibe in Thailand too. Something about the energy of the people over there is very warm and welcoming. I felt that in Hong Kong too, people were very nice and kind to me and it's not like they were trying to sell me anything so it was not for my money.....

In India there are places with great vibe and great people, but not so much in Delhi (though I did meet a few nice people over there too).

when I was in the smaller towns in India and in some villages I noticed the people are very nice and warm. In india there are a lot of very poor people, beggars and leprous in the street.
Very hard to see at first, but if you get passed that you will love India...

I live in a country where people are very stressed and often very impatient So going to a place like Thailand or India was a huge breath of air....
Hong Kong is very busy and capitalistic but despite of that people are still much more patient and nice then where I live...

If you look at other things these countries have in common you will find some other clues.

Many of them are still tied to the natural rather than social way of things.
They have social constructs, but things like food and surviving still hold a great deal of value in these peoples lives.

They also have room in their current beliefs for things like 'Karma' which do not cost anything but make a big difference to the day to day lives of the people.

Altogether they are less selfish societies (in the western sense of the word) and they value the natural order.
