Japan is a country that is dying—literally. Japan has more people over the age of 65 and the smallest number of people under the age of 15 in the world. It has the fastest negative population growth in the world, and that's because hardly anyone is having babies. In these difficult times, the Japanese are putting marriage and families on the back burner and seeking recreational love and affection as a form of cheap escape with no strings attached. We sent Ryan Duffy to investigate this phenomenon, which led him to Tokyo's cuddle cafes and Yakuza-sponsored prostitution rings.

Interesting that you should post this.

There was a documentary on TV here in the UK (BBC2) the other day that I caught about this.

Quite worrying indeed.

Whole areas of the country where there are no schools anymore due to there being no children.

People not having babies any more... A stagnation in the reproduction of the human race. Hmmm... I wonder if this is nature's way to battle overpopulation.

But this Host club thing seems interesting, in the name of science.

and BBC3. When the BBC get hold of something, they like to keep hold of it.

On BBC3 they were talking to some guy who said he preferred blow up dolls to real women and could never have a sexual interaction with a real woman because she couldn't compare to the doll.

To be fair Japan is a relatively small country and has a history of not trading overseas. The population is 126m.

and to put things into more perspective:

Came across this yesterday as a friend posted it on FB on Tuesday. Interesting indeed. Deserves our attention.

And population decline is not unique to Japan.
Towards a ‘baby recession’ in Europe?

Japanese see the other side of the coin, but it is black and white thinking. Marriage doesn't have to include a legal contract or lifelong commitment. Kids don't require marriage, a legal contract or lifelong commitment. Relationships don't have to be restrictive, committed or lead to marriage.

I think many of those surveyed men and women are projecting. Quoting peregrinus "Also, most of those men, I suspect if you put the right woman in front of them who satisfied all of their criteria, they would be FAR from indifferent." (applies to women as well)
