George Orwell's 1984 is the expression of a mood, and it is a warning. The mood it expresses is that of near despair about the future of man, and the warning is that unless the course of history changes, men all over the world will lose their most human qualities, will become soulless automations, and will not even be aware of it.

I thought I'll never see this thread in this forums, I was wrong. 8-)

I cannot recommend this book enough, when you get to the the double think part be aware of it, I think this definition Orwell coined, has some deep magic imbued in it.
Very good book, and depressing if you are the emphatetic kind.
Also some sad moments come to me personally, because it was 2013 when I was reading this book in conjuction with the book Siddartha from Hesse, that my Grandma died, very reavealing moment for me.

Thankyou TheDude.

One day I'm really going to have to read this book. It's very high on my list.

Same I picked it up from Amazon. Ironically they deleted it from their Kindle devices sometime back in 2009 because of a copyright issue.

However, when I cop it, I'm going to try to get it as an audiobook.

The authors inspiration for the government described in the book came from the dictators of that time, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. I didn't know much about Stalin and I decided to watch a documentary on him. The one I watched was good and if you're interested in knowing more about that time I would recommend this documentary.

It amazes me how much our physical comforts have increased in the developed countries, compared to back then (generally speaking).
