Same here! Got all of his books to date, can't wait for this. Sounds like the ultimate self-help book as opposed to all of the others.

Just heard this in the song primetime by Kayne and Jay Z

"At 42, be better than 24's.
I carry the 4-5, mastered 48 laws"

Interesting.

Anyone read this?

Post subject:  Re: Mastery

I read the book and I didn't like it. First of all, I disagree with the main premise of the book: everyone is born with a particular calling/passion. If you don't find this passion then you won't be a master. Well, that sounds fine and dandy, but our ancestors did not have the luxury of sitting down and finding their passion. Some of them, simply chose a line of trade and went into it, not out of passion, but mere interest and practicality.

So, when Greene reduces all masters to this one common paradigm I feel he is truly selling out: his intentions become more about presenting something that people want to read and will most likely agree with.

After figuring out your passion, you are supposed to follow another cliched advice: the 10,000 hours rule of practice. By this point, I was getting a bit skeptical and realizing that Greene, has merely packaged common mainstream advice into lyrical prose and presents modern and classical examples in order to make it seem like his theory is original. Well it's not.

The 10,000 hour rule is followed by getting a mentor and being able to practice/learn as much from him/her because of the added benefit of immediate feedback. Greene then goes on to say that there comes a point when the disciple must break free from his mentor and start creating original work of his own. This is hardly groundbreaking stuff, and by this point in the book I did question, what was the point of reading this.

To sum it up, if you want to read about really common sense advice, that you probably know on what it takes to be a master, filled in with pop-psychology du jour and cheap cliches, then by all means read this book. I do have to give Greene some credit in that he is a very good writer, and is a master himself at concealing and veiling his lack of content by his story telling.

That's a shame, I thought his 48 laws of power were a blast. As was the Art of seduction.

Perhaps I will refrain from buying this.

The 10,000 hour rule was mentioned earlier
on another thread. M.Gladwell wrote about it
too, in his book Outliers. I have heard theories
for it and against it.

+Leafed through 48 laws, intend to read it in the near
future.

I wrote this today, using my wordpad....

In RPG terms (SW 6d), my current top 10 skills are as follows:

Guitar Operating 6D Mechanical skill
(38,225h )

Languages 4D Knowledge skill
(5 languages, plus Deutsch intermediate about 4,000 words, and 3 other languages, rudimentary or pre-intermediate 1,000 - 2,000 words)

Music Theory 3D+2 Knowledge skill
(walkthrough; plenty of genres, from playing the guitar in a traditional dance band w/accordions, to playing heavy metal and VGM. I can write for an orchestra, except brass ensemble and I´m not comfortable writing for clarinets family. )

Arts 3D+2 Mechanical skill
(Pencil, Handicraft)

Self-development 3D+2 Knowledge skill
(300 books, seminars, one on one. And of course this forum.)

Lores and Legends 3D+2 Knowledge skill
(Rare words or tales; Udumbara, Couvade, Jiang Shi or Ivar the Boneless... at this point you´ve probably heard about all of them. +Occult religions.)

Cultures 3D+1 Knowledge skill
(Languages boost this automatically. Lores and legends is actually a subset developed from this knowledge based skill. +Main stream spirituality and religions.)

Business 3D+1 Knowledge skill
(Training: for 1 year, studied from +50 books independently.)

Melee 3D+1 Dexterity skill
(Bokken, Bou, Whips, Chains, and a few serious fights using a handsaw and an iron weight lifting bar, wooden polearm sort of thing with nails attached on its both ends. Nasty shit.)

Stamina 3D Strength skill
(Jogging, bicycle, snowshoe adventures...)

*Basic level skill is 2D when it is undeveloped
**D = die, dice
***up to 7D skill is a lifelong task. (Dedicate 40-50 years. Goethe had several 7D skills.)

Wow, that's extremely impressive. How much time a day do you dedicate towards guitar? And is it your full time job at this point?

Thanks, man,

Anywhere between 1 hour and 5 hours, but as a teenager
and in my 20s I practiced 10-15 hours a day.

22h is my PR. ( I'm 39 now ) I've played all my life.
Developed perfect pitch by 20y. Not born with it, though.

Guitarists I like;

Greg Howe (1)
Andy James
Steve Vai
Allan Holdsworth
Michael Angelo Batio
Tiago Della Vega
Carlos Vamos
John Petrucci
Wolf Hoffmann
Joe Pass
