When I was reading for a class, a thought occurred to me about post that you made somewhere on the forum. I'm not sure if you were telling a story or responding to someone else.

It was something along the lines that using logic doesn't always work to understand emotion?

I would like to understand your thoughts on how logic can be used to understand emotion. You can't convince people that are being emotional with logic; you can't use emotion to convince people that are being logical.

This pertains to the development of myself. If I'm in an emotional state then how is it possible that I can convince and decipher my inner thoughts with logic?

This thought is related to the thread below and the process we talked about in private messaging for changing myself about a month back.

Logic and emotion are incompatible. You may be talking about what I refer to as 'logical override', where you can recognize when you are emotionally compromised and then allow logic to take over. :geek:

Accept that you are being emotional.

Let those emotions happen.

Observe them.

Realise they are emotions, not based on logic.

Then see how you feel when you attempt to logically think about it.

I was emotionally compromised tonight. Your bolded statement may not have been specific enough if I get this wrong.

Without delving into the situation, that will come later as more things develop, I find that logic cannot understand emotion.

I would pause and attempt to derive a logical conclusion about the situation. It was not possible.

Emotion is characterized by an attempt to protect, enjoy, or both. The ends of what emotion is doing are within understanding. The emotion itself is out of logic's reach insofar as you are attempt to decipher the heart (lacking a better term) of the emotion. You can identify the cause and the result of the emotion, but you cannot identify the movement. :ugeek:

It is better left to emotion's side to let the emotion play out as you see fit with logic.

Logic can tell you what to do after the movement of emotion has ended. Emotion is a feeling in motion. I think you Grinus' may have used the term "energy in motion" in other parts of the forum.

This is where the logical override occurs. After the movement, you harness logic and emotion together to ask yourself to do something about it. What you choose is dependent upon the situation.

I've said all that my gut has told me. :!:

Question:

Can rational thinking be based on emotions?

Anatoly Protopopov:

It isn't based on the emotions - it produces them. It is instinctive behaviour that is based on the emotions. When we perform rationally-based actions, we feel emotions too, because a general motivational mechanism is involved here. For example, feeling of joy because of a scientific discovery is an emotion, too. But it is important to recognize that both the instincts and the reason have thir own channels of communication with those emotional-motivational centers, and with instinctive mechanisms those channels are shorter and more mighty, and the instinctively-based emotions are more often stronger. The difference lies also in the fact that an instinctively-based emotion appears BEFORE its explanation (or justification), and the rationally-based one appears AFTER that. Not to speak that a logical explanation to an instinctively-based emotion is sometimes very hard to find.
