Are we living conscious or unconscious lives?
We fear independence, taking responsibility for our lives.
People are empty, they feel sadness and loneliness, insecurity and inadequacy. They try to fill the void with material possessions.
Not following the herd, not following convention, it's your responsibility. No matter how many people tell you you're wrong or right, you don't depend upon their approval. If we at least question our own actions, our own thought process and make a conscious decision to what we feel is right every single day, that is really what it feels like to be alive.
I also like his interpretation of dealing with our demons.
As human beings, we are given both (social) programming and free will, so that if we come to realize this programming, to repudiate and abort it to our benefit. However, if we do not realize it in time, the programming will persist until completion.
The great philosophical debate regarding free will and determinism is a topic that fits this forum and I would be happy to expand upon it.
As Agent Smith put it: "Billions of people just living out their lives... oblivious".
